Age-by-age reading guide

What's typical, what to do at home, and when to ask for help — at every age from 2 to 12.

Ages 2–3

What's typical

  • • Loves being read to
  • • Points at pictures
  • • Joins in on repeated phrases

Try at home

  • • Read aloud 10+ minutes daily
  • • Sing nursery rhymes
  • • Name objects everywhere

Watch for

  • • Not making eye contact with book by age 3
  • • No interest in being read to at all

Ages 4–5

What's typical

  • • Recognizes letters
  • • Hears rhymes
  • • Pretends to read familiar books

Try at home

  • • Start letter sounds
  • • Play rhyming games
  • • Let your child 'read' the pictures

Watch for

  • • Can't recognize any letters near kindergarten entry
  • • No interest in print or logos

Ages 6–7

What's typical

  • • Decodes simple words
  • • Reads short sentences
  • • Retells a story

Try at home

  • • Daily read-aloud + 5–10 min decoding practice
  • • Use decodable books

Watch for

  • • Guessing words from pictures
  • • Slow, effortful decoding after a full year of instruction

Ages 8–9

What's typical

  • • Reads chapter books independently
  • • Discusses characters
  • • Reads for pleasure

Try at home

  • • Book series to reduce choice cost
  • • Family read-alouds still
  • • Discuss the ending

Watch for

  • • Avoidance of reading aloud
  • • Comprehension noticeably behind decoding

Ages 10–12

What's typical

  • • Reads longer texts
  • • Forms opinions
  • • Picks by author/genre

Try at home

  • • Give reading choice + time
  • • Try graphic novels and audiobooks
  • • Talk about themes

Watch for

  • • Complete loss of interest — often a signal of stress, difficulty or fit
