What phonics actually is
Phonics is the systematic teaching of how letters (graphemes) map to sounds (phonemes). It's the single most well-established approach in reading research — and it works.
The 6-step roadmap

Start with sounds, not letter names
Kids need to hear that 'sun' starts with /s/. Letter names come later.

Teach the most useful sounds first
A, m, s, t, i — because you can build real words (at, sit, mat) immediately.

Blend three sounds
Stretch: /mmm/-/aaa/-/t/. Then say it fast: mat. Practice daily for 5 minutes.

Add digraphs
sh, ch, th, ck — two letters making one sound.

Long vowels with silent e
Introduce the 'magic e' pattern: cap → cape, hop → hope.

Vowel teams & r-controlled
ai, ee, oa, ar, or. Now they can read most simple books independently.
